Xbox head Phil Spencer stopped by IGN Live to chat after the Xbox Expo today, talking about some of the biggest reveals and announcements. One of those events was not only the reveal of Doom: The Dark Ages, but the announcement that it would be coming to PlayStation 5 as well.
When asked about the decision made by IGN’s Ryan McCaffrey, Spencer attributed the decision, at least in part, to id Software’s studio director Marty Stratton.
“Doom is definitely one of those franchises that has a history across multiple platforms,” Spencer explained. “It’s a series that I think everyone deserves to play. When I was in a meeting with Marty a couple of years ago, I asked Marty what he wanted to do, and he said he wanted to sell it on all platforms. Simple.”
After widespread rumors and anticipation, Doom: The Dark Ages was officially revealed at the Xbox Showcase today, and it was also confirmed that it will be headed to PlayStation 5 as well as Xbox Series X/S and PC. It represents a recent confirmation Notepad report The next Doom release will be part of what’s called “Project Latitude,” which is said to be the internal name for Xbox’s ongoing campaign to bring first-party titles to competing consoles.
This cross-platform push officially began in February when Xbox announced four exclusives headed to competing consoles: Grounded, Pentiment, Hi-Fi Rush, and Sea of Thieves. At the time, Xbox explained the move by saying… Xbox wire Next, “to ensure the long-term success of both Xbox and the industry as a whole, we must continue to evolve.”
As for what else we know about Doom: The Dark Ages, it’s a dark fantasy prequel with a medieval-inspired theme. Xbox said today after the demo that it “puts players behind the mask of the Great Assassin as they battle demonic hordes in brutal combat within an epic, cinematic story of gods, kings, and monsters.”
