Top stories for New York from Tuesday night 2023 Michelin guide The ceremony was the upgrade of two Japanese spots from one to two Michelin stars: the upscale Edomae-style Sushi Noz on the Upper East Side, with chef Abe Nozomu; and Kaiseki Flatiron Restaurant, Odo, by Hiroki Odo.
Major Food Group has also returned to the Michelin mix, after ZZ’s Clam Bar and Carbone dropped from the list last year. Torrisi Restaurant & Bar in Little Italy is hard to get into, led by Chef Rich Torrisi, which has earned him a Michelin star.
Perhaps the bitterest award will go to the two-star Al Coro in the former home of Del Posto, and the one-star Oxalis in Prospect Heights, both of which are on track to close by the end of the year.

The best restaurants haven’t changed this year, with four three-Michelin-starred restaurants, including Eleven Madison Park, Le Bernardin, Masa and Per Se, the latter of which closed for remodeling over the summer and reopened in September. Only one restaurant was dropped from the three-star list, with the brief closure of Chef’s Table at Brooklyn Fare, which reopened with a revamped kitchen team after ownership dissolved.
In total, there were 14 restaurants awarded two Michelin stars, with only Momofuku Ko omitted from the list. Chef Udo was not present at the ceremony to receive his award; A spokesperson says he was in a catering job and follows on YouTube.
Eight new one-star restaurants have joined the list of 55 New York restaurants with one Michelin star. Additions are Bōm, a tasting menu restaurant from Chef Brian Kim and the Oiji Mi team; Essential fragrance by Christophe by Christophe Bellanca; Subterranean Goji with chefs Georges Rouen and Daniel Boulud; and Meju, a chef’s counter with a focus on fermentation at Little Banchan Shop in Long Island City. Sushi Ichimura joins the menu, from Eiji Ichimura, the chef behind the previous two-Michelin-starred Ichimura restaurant in Ocho and, before that, Brush. Eyal Shani’s Shmoné has also been added, along with a French-Japanese tasting menu, and Yuu, the only new restaurant in Brooklyn to receive a star.
Anonymous Michelin inspectors dropped a handful of restaurants from the one-star list, including the now-shuttered Patard; Casa Enrique in Long Island City; Contra in Manhattan which has closed and will become a new restaurant by the same owners; the Mexican restaurant Claro in Brooklyn; Manhattan’s popular Don Angie; Kanoyama; River Café; and Sushi Ginza Onodera, which closed.
According to the guide, one star means “high-quality cooking, worth a stop.” Two stars indicate “excellent cooking, worth the detour;” Three stars means “exceptional cuisine, worthy of a special trip.” The ranking process for this year’s guide ended in late September, according to Andrew Festa, a Michelin spokesperson.
On November 1, Michelin added 11 new restaurants to its Bib Gourmand category, which recognizes good value. There are now a total of 102 restaurants on the list, down from 125 last year. This category honors restaurants where customers can order two courses of food and a drink or dessert for about $50 before tax and tip.
Before the awards were announced, several industry insiders, including Madalyn Summers of Cafe Mars in Gowanus, were honored for outstanding service; Enrique Olvera Cosme, for exceptional cocktails; and Yannick Benjamin from Harlem’s Contento for the Top Sommelier Award. The Young Chef of New York award went to Telly Justice of Obsession The Michelin Chef Award went to Emma Bengtsson from Aquavit.
